GIRL NO. 60427 - The first and only Israeli film to win a BAFTA
In July of 2022, Maaleh graduate Shulamit Lifshitz and animator Oriel Berkovitch received the YUGO-BAFTA (British Academy) award for live action in the student competition with their film “Girl No. 60427”.
This was the first time that a film representing the State of Israel reached the finals of the competition. Maaleh is proud to be the only film school in Israel to ever win a BAFTA award!
The film combines live action cinematography and animation, and is based on the director's relationship with her grandmother, a Holocaust survivor who wrote a journal about her experiences in a DP camp. When announcing their decision, the judges stated, “a deep and emotional film, which brings to extraordinary artistic expression the experiences of the third generation of Holocaust survivors."
Since 2022, GIRL NO. 60427 has screened at tens of festivals worldwide and garnered many awards. Now available for educational distribution, the film was recently acquired by a German organization for use in Catholic high schools across Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
