תחקיר מהווה יציאה לשטח, בדיקה של הנושא, אמינותו ותקינותו. סיור לוקיישן, בחירת דמויות וידיעת כל הנושא לאשורו ולעמקו.
רק לאחר תחקיר מקיף על רעיון הסרט, עלילתי או דוקמנטרי, כמו גם אירועים ותדמית, אפשר לשבת ולכתוב תסריט.
לכל סרט תסריט אחר, מבוים או אמיתי. התחקיר אינו אבן הפינה לסרט הגדול.
